Drama of the Month: Chicago Typewriter 시카고 타자기

Being a second year university student doesn't give you much time to sit down and binge watch dramas. But with the help of Instagram accounts that post snippets of an episode, I still managed to catch up on some dramas (Huge thanks to people who do it---you know who you are!).

Recently, I've been watching:

시카고 타자기 Chicago Typewriter

(And yes, I'm being extra by using that typeface...)

Official Teaser from TvN

What's it about?

Writers that lived under Japanese rule in the 1930's are reincarnated into a bestselling writer who is in a slump, a mysterious ghostwriter and an anti-fan of the bestselling writer. (TvN)

What I think it is...

Story of how the lives of a bestselling writer Han Se-ju and a fan of his works, Jeon Seol became intertwined after the appearance of a mysterious ghost rapped in a typewriter from the 1930s. As the story unfolds, the ghost reveals that the three were friends in their past lives(---and perhaps in a love triangle...). But for some odd reason, the ghost is the only one who didn't get to reincarnate after his death-that's why he needs Han Se-ju to write the novel about their past lives, which would tell the ghost how his life ended and allow him to reincarnate...

What's special about it?

1. Intriguing Storyline

Past lives and jumping between times seem to be recurring themes in recent TVN dramas such as Goblin and Tomorrow with You. It is interesting to see how the characters' past lives are bringing them closer in the present. As a viewer, I'm also eager to find out what happened in their past lives that prevented the ghost from reincarnating. Did the ghost betray/ got betrayed by the other two in the trio? And yes, as one would expect, a love-triangle was there(typical of Korean dramas). But there's a rather character that's making me curious too: the two-faced writer Baek Tae-min (played by Kwak Si-yang), who's a friend-turned rival of Han Se-ju. His smile is a bit unsettling to me... What is his role in the trio's past and current lives? How would his presence change the story? What kind of plot twists would there be?

2. Well-known Actors

To be honest, I don't really pay attention to names when I watch dramas or movies---it's the plot and characters that captures me. I don't know much about actors' reputation in the acting industry either. This is probably because I haven't been immersed in the Korean entertainment world for too long. Apparently the actors starring in this drama are quite famous for their acting in Korea. I think that's an indicator of how captivating the script must be.

3. Nostalgic vibes

If you're looking for dramas with some historical background, this is for you. Not sure how much of history they're going to incorporate into the storyline though...

The vintage looks, the antique props (typewriter looking fancy there) and the classy set(performance stage in 1900s)? Definitely a feast to the eyes.

4. OSTs i.e. Soundtracks

I'd say they give off a similar feeling as Goblin's OSTs. Nostalgic, but not too much. Lingering melodies...

I'm liking this one a lot:
